There’s no doubt about it — Texas is growing fast. In fact, the fastest growing cities in Texas took six of the top 15 spots on the list of the fastest growing cities nationwide between 2010 and 2019.

TX has a booming economy and housing market. Both of those are spurred by some of the fastest growing cities for jobs. But that’s not all: the thriving economy is just one of many reasons more people are moving to the Lone Star State every year. Texas has no shortage of real estate, cultural attractions, world-class dining and unbeatable shopping. These factors come together to make the largest state in the lower 48 the one to watch.

Below, we list the five fastest growing Texas cities and take a look at key information for anyone who is considering moving to the land where everything is bigger.

1. Frisco, TX

What is the fastest growing city in Texas? Frisco. It was also the fastest growing city in the country over the past decade. Frisco’s population increased by more than 71% between 2010 and 2019, with a 2019 population of 183,173, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. City officials don’t expect the growth to stop, either. By 2030, their moderate population growth projection places the population of this Dallas-Fort Worth suburb at more than 300,000.

In 2020 alone, 13,241 new residents made their homes in Frisco, which also happens to be the home of the Dallas Cowboys. At that rate, there’s nearly no doubt that Frisco will be one of the fastest growing cities in Texas in 2021.

In Frisco proper, the biggest employer by far is the Frisco Independent School District, followed by the City of Frisco government. Other notable employers include T-Mobile and Baylor Medical Center, but keep in mind that Frisco is well-known as a bedroom community for people who work in the bustling DFW area.

If you’re thinking of moving to Frisco and are interested in buying a home, you might want to get in while you can. The average price per square foot for a home in Frisco in 2021 is $186, which is 20% higher than it was a year prior. 

2. New Braunfels, TX

New Braunfels wasn’t just one of the fastest growing cities in Texas in recent years — it was the third fastest growing city in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This San Antonio suburb, known for its German Texan history and German festivals, saw its population grow by more than 56% between 2010 and 2019. 

The city is quickly approaching the 100,000 population mark at an estimated population of 90,209, as of the latest census data. With a relatively small population, access to one of the largest metro areas in Texas and plenty of opportunity, New Braunfels is something of a hidden gem among the fastest growing Texas cities.

Key Industries in New Braunfels

The Comal Independent School District is the largest employer in New Braunfels, but private industry accounts for many jobs in the area. The Schlitterbahn water park, Walmart Distribution Center and Colorado Materials are some notable examples.

On average, homes in New Braunfels sell for around $159 per square foot in 2021. While this is reasonable compared to many Texas metros, it’s also up more than 14% from 2020. 

3. McKinney, TX

McKinney came in just behind New Braunfels in terms of population growth over the last decade. With an estimated 2021 population of 199,177, this DFW suburb saw its population grow by nearly 52% between 2010 and 2019.

Noting McKinney’s historic downtown area — one of the oldest in Texas — and numerous parks and recreation areas, CNN and Money Magazine recognized the city as the best place to live in the U.S. in 2014. The city’s explosive growth since then suggests that the accolades had an effect on readers.

International aerospace and defense company Raytheon Space & Airborne Systems is McKinney’s top employer, but the education and healthcare industries employ a large portion of McKinney’s professionals. Collins College, the McKinney Independent School District, the Medical Center of McKinney and the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center are among the city’s top employers.

From 2020 to 2021, the average price per square foot of homes sold in McKinney jumped by around 25%. As of 2021, that price is at $175 per square foot.

4. Cedar Park, TX

Cedar Park’s population increased by more than 44% over the past decade, leaving this Austin suburb’s estimated 2019 population at 79,462. Rapid and sustained growth in nearby Austin is likely one of the drivers of Cedar Park’s growth, but with business-friendly policies and excellent schools, Cedar Park is also one of Texas’s fastest growing cities for jobs.

The H-E-B Center at Cedar Park centers the city’s cultural events, from sports to major musical acts, just north of downtown and attracts stars as big as George Strait to what has now become one of the fastest growing cities in Texas.

The Cedar Park Regional Medical Center employs more Cedar Park workers than any other institution in the area, but CoreSlab Structures and ETS-Lindgren (EMC Test Systems) follow closely behind. Companies in the oil, aerospace and materials supply and distribution industries make up a large portion of Cedar Park’s industry profile.

It hasn’t been cheap to live in Cedar Park for a while, and 2020-21 made that sound like an understatement. In one year’s time, the average price per square foot of homes sold in Cedar Park jumped by more than 41% to land at $231.

5. Conroe, TX

If you want to be in a city that has a lot going on but aren’t quite ready to brave the Houston traffic, Conroe, Texas, might be the place. This suburb 40 miles north of Houston saw its population increase by more than 39% over the last 10 years. But even with such enormous growth, the city’s estimated population remained under 100,000 — at 91,079 — as of 2019.

Moving to Conroe might be a little easier than moving to some of the other fastest growing cities in Texas. That’s because the average price per square foot of homes sold in Conroe in 2021 is $131. And while that represents a 17% increase over 2020, it’s still lower than some of the other fastest growing cities in the state.
